CLIMATE CHANGES AND NEMATODES: EXPECTED EFFECTS AND PERSPECTIVES FOR PLANT PROTECTION

2011

Some factors interfering with plant protection from phytoparasitic nematodes are reviewed in the light of changes brought about by the global warming in action. The mechanisms mainly concern changes in temperature and water regimes. The effects of climate changes on the epidemiology and management of the main phytoparasitic species occurring in Mediterranean environments include the alteration of the reproductive cycles due to plants productivity, the geographic dispersion by more northern or higher altitude shifts, the spread of vectors. Other related indirect mechanisms are feedback effects due to the reactions of cultivated species or weeds, and those related to natural enemies. The pote…

Entomopatogēno nematožu Steinernema feltiae (Filipiev 1934) sastopamības novērtējuma aprobācija pēc Galleria mellonella metodes, to populācijas izmai…

2020

Darbā kalibrēta vienkārša, kvantitatīva metode entomopatogēno nematožu Steinernema feltiae (Filipiev, 1934) sastopamības novērtēšanai izmantojot Galleria mellonella (Linnaeus, 1758) kāpurus kā ēsmu. G. mellonella ēsmas tests tika kalibrēts divu dažāda vecuma sterilizētas kokosa šķiedras substrātā, kur tika konstatēta būtiska korelācija starp S. feltiae indivīdu blīvumu un G. mellonella mirstību 48h laikā gan svaigā (p<0.01, r=0.86, n=25), gan trīs gadus lietotajā (p<0.01, r=0.85, n=25) substrātā. Piecu nedēļu laikā dažāda vecuma rožu stādījumos ievāktos paraugos reģistrētas atšķirības pētījumā iesaistīto taksonu sastāvā, konstatēta S. feltiae telpiskās izplatības heterogenitāte, ilgstoša sa…

CARATTERIZZAZIONE METAGENOMICA di MICRORGANISMI E ORGANISMI DEL TERRENO PER UN LORO UTILIZZO COME AGENTI di LOTTA BIOLOGICA CONTRO NEMATODI FITOPARAS…

2014

Pristionchus sp. (Rhabditida: Diplogastridae) from Italian populations of Anoplophora chinensis Forster (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae).

2009

Priostonchus sp. n. (Rhabditida: Diplogastridae) is described from a population of Citrus Longhorn Beetles. Alive adults of this Cerambycid were collected from Acer saccharinum trees at Assago and Parabiago (Villastanza), two localities near Milan (Italy). The natural occurrence of the entomogenous nematode in the beetle was not frequent and widespread in the study area. Preliminary laboratory infectivity tests highlight the potential parasitic nature of the nematode. However, it was not successfully maintained in storage and culture. The diplogasterid Pristionchus sp. has rather complicate systematic thus a biomolecular analysis based on DNA is necessary for more specific identification an…

Sustainable Weed, Disease and Pest Management in Medicinal and Aromatic Plants

2015

As for all other crops, in MAPs as well, weeds, diseases and pests are important yield-reducing factors, which may severely curtain biomass production and, that is maybe more important, may affect several qualitative aspects of production. Research about this topic is generally lacking, for two main reasons: the first is that MAPs are generally grown on rather limited areas, and the incidence of specific pests and diseases rarely takes a relevance outside rather narrow boundaries. The second reason is that the economical importance of MAPs is much lower than that ascribed to the “major” crops, which the bigger efforts of research are addressed to. In the changing scenario of latter years, h…

Shifts in size, genetic structure and activity of the soil denitrifier community by nematode grazing

2010

International audience; Bacterial-feeding nematodes represent an important driver of the soil microbial activity and diversity. This study aimed at characterizing the impact of nematode grazing on a model functional bacterial guild involved in N-cycling, the denitrifiers. Bacterial-feeding nematodes (Cephalobus pseudoparvus) were inoculated into soil microcosms whose indigenous nematofauna had previously been removed. The size, genetic structure and activity of the soil denitrifier community were characterized 15 and 45 days after nematodes inoculation using quantitative PCR of the nirK, nirS and nosZ denitrification genes, fingerprinting of the nirK and nirS genes and denitrification enzym…

Biological responses of Rhynchophorous ferrugineus to Steirnenema carpocapase: an example of a model system

2011

Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) known as the Red Palm Weevil (RPW) is becoming more and more of a problem in Italy, and especially in Sicily, where it is well adapted. The infestations are mainly in the urban areas, and for that reason, chemical control is not advisable. Data from literature show that entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) control RPW quite successfully in the field. However, results coming from the laboratories are often in contrast with each other and no data are available on precise doses. In this context we studied the Median Lethal Dose (DL50) and the Median Lethal Time (TL50) of young and older larvae and also of adults. The doses for the adults were t…
